Description:
As part of a $155 million expansion project launched in 2005, Karagozian & Case (K&C) engineers performed structural analyses and generated designs for three new hospital buildings which consisted of a patient wing, ED/ICU, and central plant. The patient wing and ED/ICU are steel framed structures with special moment resisting frames (SMRF). All three buildings are designed for continued operation following a design level earthquake. Due to site conditions and potential for liquefaction, the foundation system is consists of drilled, cast-in-place friction concrete piles and grade beams.
In addition to the structural framing, K&C provided design and detailing for anchorage and support of non-structural components such as medical equipment, MEP components, partitions, and exterior wall framing. The exterior wall framing utilizes an in-plane slip connection designed to accommodate story drifts while maintaining the integrity of the exterior building envelope.

- Development of Construction Drawings
Description:
Karagozian & Case has performed numerous blast and security related evaluations for facilities located throughout the world. K&C has been awarded several long term agreements with government agencies and NGO’s related to performing BEA/VA studies and the development of protective designs.
The facility shown was evaluated by K&C as to its vulnerabilities to blast and other forms of security threats (e.g. forced entry/ballistic resistant (FE/BR) protection). This included performing BEA/VA studies; the results from one of the studies indicate the damage imparted to the curtain wall of the facility by a particular bomb scenario. Red sections indicate the sections of the building which are most vulnerable.
