With increasing needs to characterize and model existing and high-performance materials, K&C has now developed the capabilities and infrastructure needed to conduct applied and research-oriented testing for materials undergoing rapid loading rates. The laboratory K&C has established is capable of characterizing various materials, including metals, ceramics, ceramic matrix composites (CMCs), and fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs).
Materials can display favorable, or sometimes unfavorable behaviors, when they are subjected to impacts, high pressure shock waves, and other dynamic loads. This makes understanding their characteristics at these loading rates, up to and beyond their failure, essential for design and analysis of systems composed of these materials.
A key feature of the laboratory allows for characterizing these materials at strain rates ranging from a few hundreds to several thousand’s 1/s. This setup is equipped with a laser sensor for accurate measurement of a projectile velocity, as well as a momentum trap mechanism for controlled loading of the test specimen.
K&C has a long history of developing accurate models, cost-effective designs and tests, and development of innovative solutions for their clients. With the addition of these in-house capabilities, K&C can now provide a one-stop solution for clients needing designs, specifications, and advanced modeling capabilities for new or existing materials exposed to extreme loads.
