Vulnerability Assessment

Vulnerability Assessment

Vulnerability assessment and mitigation cost (VA/MC) studies are often the first step in addressing the risks at a particular site. These studies are critical in achieving a cost effective means to reduce a facilities vulnerability to external threats such as terrorist bombs, large earthquakes, and high velocity impacts from vehicles. K&C is unique in its ability to provide effective mitigation measures that are within a client’s budget, fit well with an existing facilities appearance, and not interfere with ongoing operations. This is critically important because when the cost is too high or mitigation too onerous often no protection is provided or the funds are spent ineffectively. At K&C VA/MC studies for buildings and other facilities at risk are accomplished in a manner that is both practical and effective with the goal of achieving an optimal level of protection within the constraints of the client’s budget, the appearance, and operational requirements. Assessments are performed using both K&C and US Government software. Some examples from a VA study are shown above relating to blast loading distribution and window damage.

Solutions

Vulnerability assessments require a broad knowledge of attack modes that could be deployed in a terrorist attack or to represent other kinds of threats (e.g., accidental explosive impacts and seismic events). Typical terrorist threats considered cover a wide range including blast, chemical/biological agents, and high-velocity impacts from vehicles and projectiles. K&C, with its unique design skills and long term history of developing innovative mitigation strategies, can provide our clients with cost effective solutions for threats that other consultants are as yet to even imagine. K&C’s skills with advanced physics-based analysis tools allow us to simulate the actual responses resulting from extreme threats. That way we can precisely tailor a design to fit at an existing site as well as provide the needed protections.

Description of Services

K&C is a leader in VA/MC studies and has done so in the US and throughout the world especially in countries and situations where there are extreme threats and particularly high risk sites.  We are especially adept at providing protection for existing facilities, where blast related concerns were not part of the original design. K&C's advanced capabilities with physics-based analytic models and our extensive background in blast tests of structural systems and components allow us to fix problems that few would tackle. Some of these services include:

  • Determining the vulnerability of existing buildings related to blast and impact effects
  • Calculating whether collapse/failures may ensue, identifying deficiencies and providing suggestions for mitigation.
  • Evaluating compliance with blast resistance and progressive collapse criteria.
  • Provide designs and cost estimates for upgrading buildings or their perimeters to mitigate vulnerabilities or meet current standards for blast, ballistic and forced-entry protection.
  • Offer a wide range of analysis tools which include the use of both advanced finite element models and simplified engineering tools to characterize loads and predict the response produced by extreme threats.
  • Perform VA/MC studies related to large magnitude earthquakes.
  • Vulnerability assessments
  • Identification of weaknesses
  • Mitigation measures
  • Cost estimates for upgrades
