Designs to Meet the Extremes of Tomorrow's World

Risk Assessment

Blast Effects Analyses

Airports: We have performed numerous blast effects analyses for airport facilities throughout the U.S.

GSA: We have performed blast effects analyses for a variety of GSA buildings following the guidelines established by GSA.

DoD: We have developed several unique designs for DoD facilities, particularly related to close-in bombs. We have also provided blast effects analyses for utilities (e.g., electrical substations including components like transformers and switches) and developed concepts for their hardening.

DOE: We have developed a range of concepts for lessening the vulnerability of DOE Plutonium storage facilities. These include protection from airblast, standoff weapons, and access denial barriers to prevent entry of large high velocity vehicles

Advanced Analysis of Complex Structures

Utilizing the latest finite element computer modeling tools, common analysis packages, like SAP and ETABS. However, we specialize in performing nonlinear dynamic analyses using commercial codes like LS-DYNA, AUTODYN, and ADINA; restricted Government codes like CTH and PRONTO3D; and our own in-house finite element codes--especially applicable to exotic situations like the two-phase analyses associated with liquefaction studies.

Risk Analysis/Design Guidance

Courses in risk assessment relative to terrorist attacks and accidental explosions are provided at academic institutions, government facilities, and for interested engineering consultants. Design guides are published by K&C for a range of needs, including assessing building vulnerability to terrorist bombings, improving a building's blast resistance, and actions that can be taken to reduce occupant risks. The engineering tools that we use for assessment of risk have been calibrated/validated against data. Having these simplified tools allows K&C to provide blast mitigation services to a wide variety of customers, especially those with small budgets.

Wealth of Information

The structural engineering team at Karagozian & Case has many years of direct field observation and administration experience during construction of major reinforced concrete and steel buildings throughout the United States. Our engineers fully understand and appreciate the need to be thorough, complete, and technically accurate in the office, and to be practical, realistic, and timely in dealing with the challenges of building major projects.
