Designs to Meet the Extremes of Tomorrow's World

Structural Engineering

While Karagozian & Case primarily provides engineering services related to blast and impact loads, our staff also provides conventional structural engineering services, which is particularly useful when integrating our design work with that provided by conventional structural engineers. We offer:

Rehabilitation and Renovation of Existing Facilities

Including historical structures, especially related to improving their blast resistance, preventing progressive collapse, reducing the magnitude of blast and impact threats, and providing perimeter and access control.

New Building and Structure Design Services

A full range of design services--from concepts and schematics, through construction documents and construction administration.

Forensic Investigations

Reports of structural condition and damage, including litigation support and expert witness services related to blast, shock, and impact problems.

Third Party Reviews

Including peer review during the design process, and plan check services for city, county, state, and Federal agencies.

Test Planning and Performance

We provide services related to testing and test planning. This includes both lab and field tests for conventional loadings as well as for blast and impact loads, especially related to progressive collapse or occupant injuries. Our services also include generation of test reports, interpretation of results, development of design guides, and design and fielding of test fixtures and test specimens.

Advanced Analysis of Complex Structures

As a standard part of our practice, we perform numerous nonlinear dynamic analyses to simulate blast and impact responses using commercial codes like LS-DYNA, Autodyn, and ADINA. We also use restricted Government codes like DYNA3D, CTH and PRONTO3D, and our own in-house finite element codes, especially applicable to exotic situations like the two-phase analyses associated with liquefaction studies. We also use the latest finite element computer design tools, including the common analysis packages, like SAP and ETABS.

Accomplishments

Karagozian & Case's engineers have conducted numerous design and rehabilitation projects. A brief overview of their experience, accomplishments, and activities include providing designs for new construction and the retrofit of existing facilities for enhancing their blast and impact resistance. This includes designs for:

  • Low-, mid-, and high-rise buildings.
  • Buildings with diverse uses, configurations, and materials.
  • Buildings in different regions of the United States and in other parts of the World, which use a variety of building codes, as well as specialty codes and guides authored by professional organizations (e.g., ASCE, SEAOC, AISC, ACI), and Government agencies (e.g., DoD, DOS, DOE, GSA, FEMA and NIST).
  • Studies related to improving structural resilience, providing protection for personnel, and reducing construction costs.
