Modeling Concrete Structures with the Finite Element Method
There are many problems where conventional blast analysis and design tools are too conservative, which can lead to costly construction costs, or worse, will push the designer to design for failure modes that simply will not happen. K&C has developed and matured a constitutive model for finite element simulations, over the span of the last 20 years, which has become a key tool in the protective design industry. The model is available to the protective design community in a number of finite element codes but requires an experienced analyst to employ it. We recently published a peer-reviewed technical paper for the American Concrete Institute that describes parameters that analysts should be aware of when analyzing concrete structures to transient loads like blast and impact. Proper use of the model can provide analysts and designers an accurate tool from which to assess concrete structures and increase confidence in their protective designs.
